Amanda Serrano vacated the featherweight WBC title in protest

The World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion Amanda Serrano vacated her title in protest against the WBC’s rules for women’s boxing. Currently, the international organization allows the ladies to box in ten 2-minute rounds in their championship fights, while the men have twelve 3-minute rounds on the ring. This doesn’t sit well with Amanda Serrano and she reveals that she is vacating the WBC belt because of it.

“I love boxing. I have given my life to this sport. No phone, no boyfriends, no parties. Just boxing. I am the only female boxer from Puerto Rico to reach the status of undisputed champion. I won titles in seven different categories. Together with Katie Taylor, we headlined a gala evening at Madison Square Garden. I am also the first female boxer to earn a 7-figure sum from a fight and sponsors. If the governing body (WBC) doesn’t allow me to box in the same rounds as the men, then I don’t want to be part of that organization. The Boxing Council refuses to evolve and accept that there is equality in the sport. That’s why I decided to vacate the title”, wrote Amanda Serrano in her social platform. The boxer will still retain her WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring titles.

On October 27th, Amanda Serrano successfully defended those titles with a unanimous decision after a 12 round fight with Danila Ramos. The WBC belt was not at stake in the bout.
