Sarah Sjostrom made history by winning her 21st individual world swimming medal

Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom made history and surpassed American Olympic icon Michael Phelps as the swimmer with the most individual world championship medals in history. The Swedish swimmer owns 21 individual medals against 20 for the legendary Michael Phelps.

The 29-year-old won the 50m freestyle final in 23.62 sec, just one-hundredth off the world record she set yesterday during the semi-final heats.

Shayna Jack (Australia) won silver in 24.10 sec, while Zhang Yufei (China) took bronze in 24.15 sec.

This is Sarah Sjostrom’s fifth world title in the 50m freestyle, and out of 21 medals in individual events, 12 are gold.

Canadian talent Summer McIntosh closed out her individual run at the Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships breaking the world record this week with an emphatic victory in the 400m individual medley. The 16-year-old swimmer, who set the world record a few months ago, led from the beginning to the end of the distance and did not give the competition a chance.

Summer McIntosh was unable to break his own record, but with 4:27.11 min she set a championship record.

Another teenager – 17-year-old Katie Grimes (USA) won silver with 4:31.41 min. Jenna Forrester (Australia) was third in 4:32.30 min.
