Dayana Yastremska is a Ukrainian professional tennis player, who is the semi-finalist at the Australian Open in 2024 and reached the career-highest WTA ranking of the world’s No 21 in January 2020. She has won three WTA 250 and one Challenger titles.

Dayana Yastremska was born on May 15, 2000, in Odesa, Ukraine. She started in tennis as a kid, showing great talent. She had early success as a junior, finishing runner-up at the 12-and-under Junior Orange Bowl in 2012. In the same season, she won the Kravchenko Cup, GD Tennis Cup U12, and Braga Open. During the next year, she played in the Junior Tour, showing great results and proving her talent. She was the runner-up at the Wimbledon Junior in 2016.

Dayana Yastremska made her professional debut in 2015, playing at the $10,000 W15 Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) and reaching the semi-finals. Later in the year, she played also at the $25,000 La Marsa (Tunisia) and $10,000 Istanbul (Turkey), but without big success, concentrating mostly on the Junior Tour.

In 2016, the Ukrainian tennis player had a great season, winning her first ITF title at the $25,000 W25 Campinas (Brazil). She also played at the $100,000 Sharm El Sheikh, where reached the quarter-finals. At the end of the year, she debuted in the Challenger Tour, losing in the first round of the WTA 125 Open BLS De Limoges. Meanwhile, at the Junior Tour, she reached the quarter-0finals of the Australian Open Junior, the semi-finals of the JA Porto Alegre \ Brasil Juniors Cup, and was the runner-up at the Wimbledon Junior.

Dayana Yastremska made her main-scheme WTA debut in 2017 and reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup. During the season, she won her second ITF title at the $60,000 Dunakeszi (Hungary) and finished as the runner-up at the $100,000 Saint-Petersburg (Russia). Her great style of play and aggression highlighted her bright future in professional tennis.

In 2018, Dayana Yastremska started the season very strongly, reaching the final of the $100,000 Cagnes-Sur-Mer (France) and $100,000 W100 Ilkley (Germany), before winning her third ITF title at the $60,000 W60+H Rome (Italy). However, the best is yet to come, as in the end of the season, she triumphed with her first WTA title, winning the WTA 250 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open. She also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open and debuted in a Masters’ tournament main scheme at the WTA 1000 China Open, but lost in the first round.

Dayana Yastremska made her Grand Slam debut in 2019 and reached the third round of the Australian Open. During the season she also won two more WTA titles, triumphing at the WTA 250 Thailand Open and WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg. Although being only 17 years old, she continues with her strong performance, reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon and the third round of the US Open. At the WTA 1000 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, Dayana Yastremska played in the quarter-final, which at the WTA 1000 China Open reached the second round. Thus, she climbed to world’s No 22 and qualified to play at the Year-End Championship Huafa Technology WTA Elite Trophy, where was eliminated in the groups.

In 2020, Dayana Yastremska started the season by reaching the final of the WTA 500 Adelaide International, thus reaching her top WTA ranking of the world’s No 20. She reached the third round of the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, but after long gap in sports events, she appeared on the court only in August to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open. By the end of the season, Dayana Yastremska reached the third rounds of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open and WTA 1000 Rome Open, as well as the second round of the US Open. She fell in rankings and finished the season as the world’s No 29.

In 2021, Dayana Yastremska did not perform very strongly. She started the season only in the summer by reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Hamburg European Open and played at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. By the end of the year, her biggest success was reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Courmayeur Ladies Open and the second round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open.

Dayana Yastremska made a good start to the 2022 season, although losing in the first round of the WTA 250 Adelaide International 2 and Australian Open, she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and was the runner-up at the WTA 250 Open 6eme Sens – Metropole de Lyon. Her good performance continued by playing in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Copa Colsanitas presented by Zurich and the second round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open. However, by the end of the season, she hardly managed to overcome the first round of the tournaments.

In 2023, Dayana Yastremska reached the semi-finals of the WTA 125 Catalonia Open and WTA 125 Open P2i Angers Arena Loire but won the title of the WTA 125 Polish Open. Thus, she dropped in the ranking, falling out of the world’s Top 100.

Dayana Yastremska made her best performance in the Grand Slam so far at the beginning of the 2024 season, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Thus, she returned to the world’s Top 30, but the next tournaments were not so much successful. However, she is a great and talented player and the best is yet to come.
