Viktoriya Tomova WTA 1000 Miami Open

Viktoriya Tomova (Bulgaria) started with a victory in the main draw of the women’s tennis tournament WTA 1000 Miami Open with a prize money of 8.7 million USD. The Bulgarian tennis player prevailed over Tamara Korpatsch (Germany) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4) in 100 minutes of play. This is the first win for Viktoriya Tomova against this opponent after 4 losses in 4 matches so far.

The Bulgarian tennis player started strongly with two breaks and took a lead by 3:0 up to close the first set at 6:2.

Tamara Korpatsch improved her gameplay in the second set and broke in the fourth game, then strengthened her serve and led 4:1. This did not affected the Bulgarian tennis player, who took the next five games in a row and closed the match with her second match point for 6:4.

In the next round, Viktoriya Tomova will face the 23rd-seeded Caroline Garcia (France). Just 11 days ago, Viktoriya Tomova lost to Caroline Garcia by 1-2 (1:6, 6:3, 3:6) in the first round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open.

In the other matches of the WTA 1000 Miami Open, Shelby Rogers (USA) eliminated Linda Fruhvirtova (Czech republic) after 2-1 (4:6, 6:4, 6:2) and in the second round will face the 21st-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia). Danielle Collins (USA) defeated her compatriot Bernarda Pera by 2-1 (3:6, 6:1, 6:1), while the Russian tennis player Elina Avanesyan eliminated her compatriot Erika Andreeva by 2-1 (6:0, 3:6, 6:1).

Camila Giorgi (Italy) also qualified for the second round after won her opening match versus Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2), while Lin Zhu (China) defeated Marie Bouzkova by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4) and Maria Timofeeva (Russia) eliminated Varvara Gracheva (France) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3).

The 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens (USA) defeated the former women’s tennis world number one Angelique Kerber (Germany) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) and in the next round will face the 19th-seeded Sorana Cirstea (Romania).
