Camila Giorgi is an Italian professional tennis player, who has a career-high singles ranking of world No 26, achieved on October 22, 2018. She is the current Italian No 1. So far, Camila Giorgi won 3 WTA, including one Masters trophy, and 5 ITF titles. She is known for her aggressive style of game and her powerful flat groundstrokes and is considered to be one of the hardest hitters of the ball on the tour.
Camila Giorgi was born on December 30, 1991, in Macerata, Italy. She was introduced to tennis at 5 years old. In 2000, she was spotted by tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, who subsequently offered her seven months of training. In November 2005, Camila Giorgi reached the final of the Nike Junior Tour but was defeated by Zuzana Luknarova from Slovakia. She reached the final at the Sey Development Cup in the Czech Republic, and the round of 16 at the Astrid Bowl in Belgium.
Camila Giorgi made her professional debut in 2006. She started with $10,000 ITF tournaments and obtained her first significant results reaching two semi-finals in Baku and Jakarta. At the end of the season, she took part in her first $25,000 tournament. She closed 2006 with ten wins and seven losses. In 2007, she continue playing in the junior and the ITF tours, reaching twice the quarter-finals of the $25,000 W25 Lagos (Nigeria). During the next year, she continues gaining experience and practice on the ITF tour, playing already at $50,000 and $75,000 tournaments, but without significant success.
Camila Giorgi won her first title in 2009 in $25,000 Katowice (Poland). Later the same year, she won another title of the $60,000 W60 Toronto (Canada). During the year, she had several quarter-finals of other ITF tournaments.
In 2010, the Italian tennis player won the trophy at $25,000 Rock Hill, SC (USA). She also was the runner-up at the $25,000 Bratislava (Slovakia).
In 2011, Camila Giorgi passed the qualifiers and reached her first appearance in a major tournament – Grand Slam’s Wimbledon. However, she lost in the first round to Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova. During the year, she won $50,000 Carson, CA (USA), was the runner-up at $50,000 Raleigh, NC (USA), and reached the semi-finals at $50,000 Bronx, NY (USA). She entered into the world’s Top 150 for a while and finished the season at No 151.
Camila Giorgi continue her development in 2012, when she debuted in the WTA tour at WTA 250 US National Indoor Tennis Championships, reaching the second round. During the year she took part also in WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open, but lost in the first round. The biggest success she made during the year, was reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon and the second rounds of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open and WTA 1000 China Open. The Italian player climbed in the world’s tanking and ended the season at world’s No 75.
In 2013, she had quite a more moderate performance, but the great performance at Wimbledon, where reached the third round, and the US Open, where reached the fourth round, saved the season. Her ranking dropped, but she managed to remain into the world’s Top 100.
However, Camila Giorgi started the season in 2014 with full power. She reached the fourth round of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells. Later she reached her first WTA final at WTA 250 BNP Paribas Katowice Open but unfortunately lost in a three-set battle to Alize Cornet. At the WTA 500 Connecticut Open, Camila Giorgi reached the semi-finals and by the end of the year she had another final at WTA 250 Upper Austria Ladies Linz but lost again. Thanks to her good performance and results, she entered the world’s Top 50 and ended the season at No 34.
In 2015, Camila Giorgi won her first WTA title at WTA 250 Libema Open. During the season, she was the runner-up at the WTA 250 BNP Paribas Katowice Open, reached the third round of the Australian Open and the Wimbledon, as well as the second rounds of the French Open / Roland Garros and the US Open. Her ranking stabilized and she was moving during the season between the world’s No 30 and No 37, ending the year at No 35.
Camila Giorgi had a terrible season in 2016 when she lost her Top 50 position. She failed to reach good results at higher-rated tournaments and her biggest success was the runner-up in the WTA 250 BNP Paribas Katowice Open.
During the next season, the Italian player had mixed results without showing her best. She started well after reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Shenzhen Open, but by the end of the season, her biggest success was reaching the third rounds of the Wimbledon and the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. Camila Giorgi kept her position as the world’s No 80.
in 2018, Camila Giorgi returned on the winning path. She reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Sydney International bu the Australian Open lost in the second round to 18th-seed Ashleigh Barty. In April, she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Livesport Prague Open, quarter-finals of the WTA 250 SAMSUNG Open in Lugano, and the third round of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. At the French Open / Roland Garros, she reached the third round, but her biggest breakthrough was at Wimbledon when Camila Giorgi reached the quarter-finals. In September, she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open. At the end of the season, however, she won her second WTA trophy at the WTA 250 Upper Austria Ladies Linz. She ended the season at her highest ranking in the world’s No 26.
Camila Giorgi had not much successful season in 2019. She reached the third round of the Australian Open and had two runner-ups in the WTA 250 Citi Open and WTA 250 NYJTL Bronx Open. She lost her ranking and dropped to world’s No 100 at the end of the season.
The next season was again not much successful for the Italian tennis player. She reached the third round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open. The season was marked by the coronavirus pandemic and many of the events were quite limited.
In 2021, Camila Giorgi won the most prestigious title at the WTA 1000 Rogers Cup. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she reached the quarter-finals, losing to Elina Svitolina. During the season, Camila Giorgi reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Viking International Eastbourne and WTA 250 Tenerife Ladies Open. These good results returned Camila Giorgi back to the world’s Top 50. She ended the season at No 33.
In 2022, Camila Giorgi started the season directly at the Australian Open, where reached the third round. However, the next tournaments were terrible for her and she lost in the first rounds.
