Federica Brignone won the women’s giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Women alpine skiing

Federica Brignone won the women’s giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, and Lara Gut-Behrami won the small crystal globe in the event and is untouchable in the top of the Alpine World Cup overall standings.

Lara Gut-Behrami was faultless in both heats, leading after the first, and in the second, despite a mistake at the top, extended her lead to finish first with a total time of 2:20.05 min. This is the 27th World Cup victory for Federica Brignone.

New Zealand skier Alice Robinson was second in the race, 1:36 sec behind the winner. The top three was completed by Thea Louise Stjernesund (Norway), 1.67 sec behind Federica Brignone.

Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland) finished tenth in the giant slalom, but that was enough to triumph for the first time in her career with the Small Crystal Globe in the event and for the second time with the Grand Crystal Globe.

Lara Gut-Behrami, 32, has won four giant slaloms, one downhill and three Super-G races this season.

Lara Gut-Behrami triumphed in the giant slalom event with 771 points, 21 more than second-placed Federica Brignone. Third is Sara Hector (Sweden) with 583 points.

In the general ranking for the World Cup, Lara Gut-Behrami is the winner with an asset of 1,680 points. Federica Brignone is second with 1,476 points, and Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) is third with 1,409 points.

Mikaela Shiffrin ended the season yesterday with a win in the slalom and did not compete in the giant slalom today. The American led the general classification until January, when a crash in Cortina d’Ampezzo took her off the tracks for a while and allowed Lara Gut-Behrami to take the lead.

The women’s alpine ski season concludes next week with super giant slalom on Friday and downhill on Saturday.
