Alexa Grasso is a Mexican mixed martial artist who competes in the flyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where she is the current UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion. Her personal MMA record is 16-1-0 (W-L-D). She is also a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Alexa Grasso was born on August 9, 1993, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She started in boxing, but later turned to MMA and started training hardly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Alexa Grasso made her professional MMA debut on December 19, 2012, at the GEX – Old Jack’s Fight Night. She faced Sandra del Rincon and defeated her via KO in the 15th second of the first round.
Her second professional MMA fight was versus Lupita Hernandez at the Fight Hard Championship 3 in May 2013. She achieved another fast victory via KO in the 12th second of the first round.
Alexa Grasso started fighting at Xtreme Kombat in August 2013. She registered two wins there versus Alejandra Alvarez and Karina Rodriguez, before signing with Invicta FC.
On September 6, 2014, Alexa Grasso made her debut in the Invicta FC 8 versus Ashley Cummins. She won the fight via unanimous decision. She continues her winning streak in the next two years for the promotion, defeating Alida Gray at Invicta FC 10 (via TKO in the first round), Mizuki Inoue at Invicta FC 11 (via unanimous decision), and Jodie Esquibel at Invicta FC 18 (via unanimous decision).
On August 11, 2016, it was announced that Alexa Grasso had signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She made her debut on November 5, 2016, at the UFC Fight Night 98 versus Heather Clark and won the fight via unanimous decision.
On February 4, 2017, Alexa Grasso faced Felice Herrig at the UFC Fight Night 104. She fought strongly but suffered her first MMA loss via unanimous decision.
Alexa Grasso continues fighting at the UFC and in August 2017 registered another win versus Randa Markos at the UFC Fight Night 114, although via a split decision.
In her next match, however, she lost again to Tatiana Suarez at UFC Fight Night 129 via rear-naked choke submission in the first round.
In 2019, Alexa Grasso had two fights. She defeated Karolina Kowalkiewicz at the UFC 238 via unanimous decision but lost to Carla Esparza at the UFC Fight Night 159 via majority decision.
Since then, Alexa Grasso had not lost a match on her road to becoming a UFC flyweight champion. She defeated Ji Yeon Kim at the UFC Fight Night 175 in August 2020 and Maycee Barber at the UFC 258 in February 2021, both via unanimous decision. On March 26, 2022, she won her fight against Joanne Wood at the UFC on ESPN 33 via rear-naked choke submission. On October 15, 2022, she defeated Viviane Araujo at the UFC Fight Night 212 via unanimous decision.
Thus, Alexa Grasso became the main contender for the UFC flyweight title. She faced Valentina Shevchenko on March 4, 2022, at the UFC 285. She won the fight via face crank submission in the fourth round.
After the victory, Alexa Grasso became the first female MMA fighter from Mexico to become a champion in the UFC.
