After CAS decision the American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal

Jordan Chiles medal Olympics

American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won in the floor final at the Paris 2024 Olympics after sports’ highest court said her result was misjudged, the International Olympic Committee confirmed.

The IOC announced it was redistributing the women’s floor final bronze to Ana Barbosu (Romania) after the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) said on Saturday night it would respect the court’s decision and move Ana Barbosu up to third place.

The ruling came less than 24 hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a scoring appeal made by Team USA coach Cecil Lundy during the race that put Chiles on the podium.

CAS ruled Saturday that Landy’s appeal to add 0.1 to Chiles’ score was outside the 1-minute window allowed by FIG.

The special commission wrote that Landy’s appeal came 1 minute and 4 seconds after the result was published.

The IOC said in a statement that it would contact the US Olympic and Paralympic Committees about returning the bronze to Chiles and work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a redistribution ceremony in honor of Ana Barbosu.

CAS wrote on Saturday that the original order of finish should be restored, with Ana Barbosu third, Sabrina Voinea (Romania) fourth and Jordan Chiles fifth.

The organization added that the FIG must determine the final ranking “in accordance with the above decision” but left it to the International Federation of Gymnastics to decide who will win the medal behind champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist Simone Biles of the United States.
