Australia’s women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team won the Paris Olympic swimming tournament title with a new Olympic record.
The Australian team of Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus led throughout the distance and had no trouble finishing first in 7:38.08 min to break the Olympic record of the Chinese women who won gold at the previous Games in Tokyo with 7:40.33 min.
The United States, gold medalists from Rio 2016, repeated the second-place they took at Tokyo 2020. For the American women, star Katie Ledecky swam in third position, who was able to close the gap on the Australian women, but in the end was unable to help the team to the gold. The USA took the silver medals with a time of 7:40.86 min. The medal is the 13th of Katie Ledecky’s career, making her the most decorated woman in Olympic swimming.
The Chinese women, Olympic champions from Tokyo 2020, remained with the bronze with 7:42.34 min.
