The United States Olympic Committee will appeal the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) ruling that led to American gymnast Jordan Chiles returning the bronze medal she won in the floor final at the Paris Games.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned an appeal of the mark by Jordan Chiles’ coach, which moved her up to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds after the 1-minute time limit for filing contests.
The International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) said it would respect the court’s decision and restore Ana Barbosu (Romania) to third place. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the decision earlier, announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from the land final to Ana Barbosu.
“We firmly believe that Jordan Chiles honestly earned her bronze medal and there are critical errors in both her initial assessment by the International Gymnastics Federation and the subsequent appeal process before the CAS that must be addressed”, says the United States Olympic Committee in a statement.
