Former Italian skier Elena Fanchini passed away from cancer at the age of 37. This happened today at her home in Solato, near Brescia. The news was announced by FIS.
Elena Fanchini is a silver medalist at the 2005 World Championships and has two World Cup victories in downhill. She last competed in December 2017, after which she was diagnosed with cancer. She had a period of remission in which she even resumed training. However, after that she broke her leg and with that she finally gave up skiing.
In recent months, her condition worsened again and eventually, the Italian succumbed to the disease.
This is terrible news for her sisters Nadia and Sabrina, who are also skiers, with the former still an active competitor.
