Anett Kontaveit is an Estonian professional tennis player, who achieved her best singles ranking of No 2 on June 6, 2022, becoming the highest-ranked Estonian singles player of all time. Anett Kontaveit qualified for the 2021 WTA Finals and became the first Estonian to participate in the year-end tournament and reach the final. She has won six singles titles on the WTA Tour as well as eleven singles and five doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
Anett Kontaveit was born on December 24, 1995, in Tallinn, Estonia. As a junior, she won the titles at the 2008 Volvo Open (Finland), 2008 Babolat Cup (Estonia), 2010 J4 Riga Open (Estonia), and 2010 Tennis Sweden Junior Cup. Her most prestigious trophy in the junior circuit was the 2011 JA Plantation \ Orange Bowl Int’l Tennis Championships (USA). During the next year, she was the runner-up at the Junior US Open and reached the semi-finals of Junior Wimbledon.
Anett Kontaveit made her debut in the professional ITF Circuit in 2011. She reached the quarter-finals of $10,000 Tallinn (Estonia) and later during the year won the title in the same tournament. In 2011, Anett Kontaveit won two more ITF titles – $15,000 W15 Savitaipale (Finland) and $15,000 W15 Stockholm (Sweden).
In 2012, the Estonian player was participating in the Junior and professional ITF Circuit simultaneously. She won the titles at $10,000 Tallinn (Estonia) and $10,000 San Luis Potosi (Mexico). However, the year was very successful in the Junior tour, where she was the runner-up at the Junior US Open and reached the semi-finals of Junior Wimbledon and Junior Rolland Garros.
Anett Kontaveit made her WTA debut in 2013, playing at WTA 1000 Miami Open after receiving a wildcard into the main draw. However, she registered a straight-set loss by Christina Mchale. However, in the ITF tour she won the trophies at $10,000 Marathon – Athens (Greece), $25,000 W25 Moscow (Russia), $10,000 Izmir (Turkey), $25,000 W25 Podgorica (Montenegro) and $25,000 Margaret River (Australia).
In 2014, the Estonian tennis babe continue playing the ITF and WTA tours. She also debuted in the Grand Slam but lost in the first round of Wimbledon. The year was not much successful for her but started playing higher-level events.
In 2015, Anett Kontaveit won the title at $50,000 Eastbourne (UK), which was her most prestigious trophy so far. In August, she made her first breakthrough at the US Open, reaching the fourth round. Following this perfect performance, she first time entered the Top 100. She ended the year at WTA No 91.
Anett Kontaveit continue playing at the WTA Tour and developing her skills in 2016. She reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Abierto GNP Seguros and WTA 250 Guangzhou Open.
In 2017, Anett Kontaveit won her first WTA title at WTA 250 Libema Open. She was also the runner-up at the WTA 250 Ladies Open Biel Bienne and the WTA 250 Ladies Championship Gstaad by iXion Services. Also reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Rome Open. She entered the Top 50 and ended the year at WTA No 34.
Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit made a fantastic season in 2018, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and the French Open / Roland Garros, the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, and the semi-finals of WTA 1000 Rome Open. During the year she was also the runner-up of the WTA 1000 Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open. She ended the year at the world’s No 20 and took part in the Year-End Championships at Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, where was eliminated after two losses in the group stage.
Anett Kontaveit continues with her great performance in 2019. She was runner-up at the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, but also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Miami Open. At the US Open, she opened the tournament with a win against Sorribes Tormo. She defeated Ajla Tomljanović in the second round but withdrew from her third-round match against 13th seed Belinda Bencic with a viral illness. Anett Kontaveit withdrew from two Premier events, in Zhengzhou and the Pan Pacific Open. She also withdrew from the Wuhan Open where she had reached the final in 2018. Her withdrawal meant that she would drop down the rankings with points being deducted from last year. She later revealed that she had been suffering from an ongoing illness and a small operation.
In 2020, Anett Kontaveit returned and made a fantastic performance at the Australian Open, reaching the quarter-finals. Later during the year she was the runner-up at the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open and reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. During the year she reached WTA No 20 but ended the season at No 23.
In 2021, Anett Kontaveit made her real breakthrough. She started the season with power and improved skills. She won the titles at WTA 500 Grampians Trophy, WTA 250 Tennis in the Land, WTA 500 J&T Banka Ostrava Open, WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup, WTA 250 Transylvania Open. She played at the Year-End Championships in Guadalajara and was the runner-up, losing in the final match from Garbine Muguruza. This was her best season ever and she ended the year at the world’s No 7.
In 2022, she won the title at the WTA 500 St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy and was the runner-up at the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, WTA 250 Hamburg European Open, and WTA 250 Tallinn Open. However, at the Grand Slam, she did not advanced more than the second round at any of the tournaments.
