Two-time World high jump silver medalist and indoor world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh won European gold in Munich. The 20-year-old Ukrainian, third at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, prevailed with a modest result of 1.95m. Yaroslava Mahuchikh cleared this height on the first attempt, which awarded her the gold. It was the lowest result to win a European women’s outdoor title since 1974.
Montenegro’s Marija Vukovic also took silver with 1.95m, but she cleared the height on her third attempt.
Serbian athlete Angelina Topic, 17, third at the U20 World Girls’ Championship in Cali earlier in the season, won her first medal at a major women’s forum. The daughter of Dragutin Topic fought for the bronze with 1.93m, which she overcame on the first attempt.
“I am speechless, I am incredibly happy. I still need time to realize what happened today. I still don’t understand how big this medal is. I will realize it in the coming years. One of the important things today was that I was clearing the heights from the first attempt. That was very important to win a medal. I had no time to rest after Jerusalem, I was mentally preparing. But I didn’t expect to win this medal”, said the happy teenager Angelina Topic after her bronze medal.
However, the big winner of the event was Yaroslava Mahuchikh. She was the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics gold medalist, 2019 and 2022 World Championships silver medalist, 2020 Summer Olympics bronze medalist, and 2022 World Indoor Championships gold medalist. At the 2019 World Championships, Yaroslava Mahuchikh jumped 2.04m, which is her outdoor personal best and a world junior record. Her indoor personal best is 2.06m, which she achieved in 2021.
