Eva Lys is a Ukraine-born German tennis player, who reached a career-high WTA ranking of world No 112 in singles on April 17, 2023. She has won three singles titles at tournaments of the ITF Women’s Circuit.
Eva Lys was born on January 12, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine. She moved to Germany at the age of two. Her father is a former tennis player who represented Ukraine in the Davis Cup and became a coach in Hamburg. Eva Lys started playing tennis as a kid, coached by her father, winning the junior titles at the 2017 Opalenica Cup and 2018 J4 Antalya \ Nurcan Sertkaya Cup. Her most prestigious junior title for sure is the 2019 J300 Bradenton \ Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships. She also played at the Junior Grand Slam, competing at the Wimbledon Junior and Australian Open Junior in 2019.
Eva Lys made her professional debut in 2017, playing at the $15,000 Hammamet (Tunisia), but lost in the first round. During the same season, she played also at the $15,000 Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine) and $15,000 Schoonhoven (Netherlands), reaching the second round. She started gaining experience with the professional players and improved her gameplay.
In 2018, Eva Lys played only one ITF tournament at the $15,000 W15 Antalya (Turkey), reaching the second round. Most of the tournaments she played during the season were in the Junior Tour. In the next season, she reached the semi-finals of the $15,000 W15 Heraklion (Greece).
Eva Lys won her first ITF title in 2020 triumphing at the $25,000 W25 Altenkirchen (Germany), but the short season seriously hampered her achievements.
In 2021, Eva Lys started playing entirely in the ITF Circuit, winning her second title at the $25,000 W25 Istanbul (Turkey). During the season she also reached the quarter-finals of the $15,000 W15 Heraklion (Greece), $25,000 W25 Vienna (Austria), and $25,000 W25 Johannesburg / Markspark (South Africa).
In 2022, Eva Lys made her WTA main draw debut, playing at the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and reached the second round. She also reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 Liqui Moly Open Karlsruhe and the second round of the WTA 250 Ladies Open Lausanne. During the season she won her third ITF title at the $60,000 W60 Trnava (Slovakia), finished as the runner-up at the $100,000 W100 Shrewsbury (UK), as well as the quarter-finals of the $25,000 W25 Birmingham (UK), $60,000 W60 Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), and $100,000 W100 Wiesbaden (Germany).
Eva Lys made a Grand Slam main draw debut in 2023, playing in the main scheme of the Australian Open. During the season she reached the second round of the US Open, the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Hamburg European Open, WTA 125 Grand Est Open 88, and WTA 125 Polish Open. She also played in the WTA 1000 China Open. Thus, during the season she peaked at the world’s No 112. At the end of the year, she made her biggest breakthrough, reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Transylvania Open.
